OPUS Alternative Provision
OPUS is our on site Alternative Provision for children who are at risk of or are permanently excluded from their mainstream provision. Our places are commissioned by Education Re-engagement Team at the Local Authority.
Enrollment
Children are referred to OPUS by the Education Re-engagement Team at Stoke-on-Trent Local Authority. We have 10 places which are commissioned by the Local Authority for children who have been or who are at risk of being permanently excluded.
Curriculum
Our curriculum has been developed to support children in developing the social and emotional skills which they have been struggling with. Our curriculum is a text based curriculum and Social and Emotional themed texts are used as the driver for the curriculum.
Assessment
All children are assessed both socially and emotionally and academically at the start, in the middle, before they start transition back to settings and at the end of the transition programme. This assessment data is used to create provision tailored to the child.
About Us
OPUS is an Alternative Provision based on the site of Ball Green Primary Academy. The provision is aimed at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Children and can host up to 10 children. The Teaching Team in OPUS are all originally from mainstream classrooms and have a secure understanding of what effective learning behaviours for mainstream provision look like. To enhance their skill set the team have all worked in various other roles within education and bring many varied skills from mainstream and specialist education. We provide children with a 12 week programme of intervention, followed by a fully supported 6 week transition back to mainstream education. We are a time limited and intervention based provision, who aim to re-integrate children back into a mainstream setting where appropriate.

English Curriculum Overview
Children complete a baseline assessment on entry to OPUS and then this guides where their learning should be pitched at using the English Curriculum Overview. The key priority is to ensure childrne have secure basic written English skills to ensure that this does not become a barrier in the mainstream classroom

Science Curriculum Overview
Our thematic texts have opportunities for links to the Science Curriculum. As we are teaching a mixed age cohort, we have prioristised certain scientific skills to address during the 12 week placement through a thematic approach to teaching.
